The first trimester of my Senior year in STEAM was spent brainstorming and fleshing out ideas for these components. For our Professional Review night before the end of the trimester, we put together a slideshow explaining the concept of our project. Professional reviews give us feedback on our projects and how to improve.

My Professional Reviewers: Joanna Mitchell, a pastor. Kim Watson, a Catholic. CJ Luck, a Christian struggling to find a place of worship.

Feedback

I am so grateful for my professional reviewers who took the time to give us advice and critique our work. All of my reviewers are Christians of different kinds, and I hope for the next review I can hear the viewpoints of non-believers, too.

The biggest thing I took away is that I need to learn why. Why don't people feel comfortable in church, why are they leaving? I was suggested to create a click-bait thing [Are you a welcoming church?] for church staff to click on that takes them to a self-check quiz. I like the idea of self-check. The pastor of a church I went to as a child informed me that in the 2000's, many young adults and teens left the church. Why? She told me I have perfect access to that demographic being a high schooler. I can show young Christian voices in my school, ask others why they don't feel comfortable in church, and learn what churches can do to change that.

Dear Joanna Mitchell,

Thank you for taking the time to review my project, Churches Of Christ. Your knowledge and insight have been very helpful in improving my work.

Our conversation has taught me that to solve a problem, I must understand the ‘why.’ Thank you for providing me with data about the Church drop-out rate, especially for youth, and helping me realize I have perfect access to my demographic. I hadn’t yet thought about youth and how we feel about welcoming spaces. I plan to take your suggestion about creating interviews showing Christian youth, their experiences with church, and why they love God.

Your feedback, as a pastor and a person, has been extremely valuable to me. Building up my confidence to create this project hasn’t been easy. Thank you, so much, for being my professional reviewer and I look forward to speaking with you again at the STEAM Professional Review on February 27th  at 6:30 pm.

Sincerely,

Hope Fletcher
