Music

I play the clarinet. Probably wouldn’t have chosen this if I had the choice, but my Papa found one for me at his work and it was cheaper than renting. My first time playing in a band during 5th grade was rough. I had switched schools in the middle of the year and was behind everyone else, just learning how to blow when the other clarinetists were already playing in the upper register. This happened again in 9th grade when my schedule couldn’t fit enough electives for band, so I spent 10th grade trying to catch up again. Still, I tried my best and played, even when I was afraid of getting it wrong, while others sat in their seats quietly. When passing out music, the other clarinet players always gave me 3rd parts, and I was fine with that. I thought I was lucky enough to be allowed to play and could never deserve 2nd or 1st, but my band director thought differently. He told me he’s never seen someone miss a year and come so far.
This year, I’m in our school’s concert band, and my audition got me a 2nd clarinet part. I couldn’t believe it! Despite falling behind and struggling, instead of quitting, I persisted and made it this far.

I’ve grown to love and appreciate music, even more than I love art, and I’m a traditional artist. When times are hard and you’re empty, or hopeless, somehow music finds a way to make you feel alive. I think I feel the most alive when I’m playing with other people. We all put a part of our soul into it when we make a song. Everywhere across the globe, there is music, something so important to every culture.

It's become important to me. And I can be an artist in a few ways, one of them being a musician. Now I'm trying to be a composer.
